Abstract: Dear Colleagues,

I invite you to read the last number of the Journal of Hearing Science for 2013. The issue starts with a review of the current uptake of cochlear implant in Europe, with profound predictions for future demand, by Leo De Raeve and Ruud van Hardeveld. The review includes a country-by-country analysis of the number of implanted persons and highlights differences between the percent of implanted adults vs children and what this implies for the future. We follow with a range of original research papers that are devoted, among other things, to electrophysiological responses and central auditory processing disorders. The issue concludes with reports from some recent meetings such as the Hearing and Structure Preservation Workshop held in October at Heidelberg, Germany. I also have some gratifying news. This year is the first time that the Journal of Hearing Science has been evaluated by Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education. JHS is now on the Ministry’s list of accredited journals, with each paper earning 5 points. I am confident that this success locally is another step towards gaining more widespread recognition and eventually an ISI Impact Factor.

With kind regards and greetings,
Prof. Henryk Skarzynski, M.D., Ph.D., Dr.h.c.
